Tips for visiting a dog friendly beach
Planning a beach dayopens in new tab and bringing the whole family – dog included? Here are some key things to keep in mind:
Check beach rules: make sure your chosen beach allows dogs and check for any seasonal restrictions.
Pack the essentials: bring fresh water, a lead, a water bowl, poo bags, a towel and something to shade your dog if need be.
Keep an eye on the tide: be aware of tide times and strong currents to keep your dog safe.
Watch out for hot sand: if the sand is too hot for your feet, it’s too hot for their paws!
Respect other beachgoers: not everyone loves dogs, so keep your dog under control and clean up after them (we beg of you).
Know your dog’s limits: not all dogs are natural swimmers, so introduce them to the water gradually and watch for signs of tiredness.

What is the difference between ‘dogs allowed’ and ‘dogs restricted’ beaches?
Dogs allowed
These beaches welcome dogs either year-round or during specific seasons. Some may have designated off-lead areas.
Dogs restricted
These beaches have rules limiting when and where dogs can go. Restrictions might be seasonal (eg, no dogs in summer) or apply only to certain areas of the beach. Always check local signs or regulations before visiting.
What to look for in a dog-friendly beach
Clear dog policies: look for beaches that explicitly allow dogs and check if there are any restrictions.
Soft sand and gentle waves: ideal conditions for running, digging and splashing safely.
Plenty of space: wide, open areas make for the best zoomies and fetch sessions!
Fresh water access: some beaches have water stations or nearby streams to keep your dog hydrated.
Shade options: natural shade or nearby shelter helps prevent overheating.
Safe swimming conditions: avoid beaches with strong tides or dangerous currents.
Nearby facilities: rubbish bins, dog waste stations, toilets for humans (dog-friendly cafes are a bonus).
Bottom line: dog friendly beaches in the UK
The UK is home to many stunning beaches, offering plenty of sand and sea for dogs to enjoy without disturbing anyone’s peace. Whether you’re planning a getaway with your dog or looking for local beaches where your dog can release their zoomies, you’ll find plenty of options across England, Scotland and Wales. Just make sure to double check any seasonal restrictions, wildlife and strong currents! Now, let’s just hope we get the weather (although our dogs won’t care).
